Why Do Weightlifters Wear Singlets? History, Rules and Purpose
Why Do Weightlifters Wear Singlets? History, Rules and Purpose
To anyone watching weightlifting for the first time, the singlet can look like a strange choice. But there are clear reasons behind it.
So, why do weightlifters wear singlets? Mainly because competition rules require them, but also because they stay in place, allow the lifter to move freely and make it easier for the referees to see the lift.
How Singlets Became Part of Weightlifting
Weightlifters did not always compete in the same type of clothing. In old competition photos, athletes can be seen wearing everything from simple shorts and vests to different styles of one-piece outfits.
As weightlifting became more organised, competition clothing became more consistent. The one-piece singlet eventually became the standard because it was practical for both the lifter and the referees.
Unlike loose clothing, a singlet stays in place during the snatch and clean and jerk. It also gives the referees a clear view of the elbows and knees when deciding whether a lift is good.
Fun Fact: Weightlifting’s Legless Singlets
Watch an older weightlifting competition and you may see athletes wearing completely legless singlets. They looked much closer to a one-piece swimsuit than the singlets used today.
Some of the biggest names in the sport competed in this style. Over time, they were replaced by the short-legged singlets that almost every weightlifter now wears.
What Do the IWF Rules Say?
Under the current IWF competition rules, athletes must wear one weightlifting costume. It must:
-
Be one piece
-
Have no collar
-
Not cover the elbows
-
Not cover the knees
-
Be worn with sports shoes
The singlet can be any colour and may include the athlete’s name, nickname, club, country or national emblem.
A T-shirt, shorts or a longer outfit may also be worn underneath if they follow the relevant rules. However, a normal T-shirt and shorts cannot replace the singlet. If a belt is used, it must be worn over it.
What Is the Purpose of a Weightlifting Singlet?
A singlet is tight enough to stay out of the way without stopping the athlete from moving.
That matters when squatting, pulling from the floor or getting under the bar. There is no loose material moving around the body, and the bar can travel close to the legs without catching on clothing.
It also helps referees see important parts of the lift clearly. This is particularly important when checking whether the elbows are fully locked overhead.
How Should a Weightlifting Singlet Fit?
A singlet should fit close to the body without feeling uncomfortably tight.
You should be able to reach a full squat, move your shoulders freely and breathe normally. The straps should stay on the shoulders, while the legs should remain in place instead of rolling up during the lift.
It is always worth training in your singlet before a competition. This gives you time to make sure the size feels right through both lifts.
LUXIAOJUN Men’s and Women’s Singlets
The new LUXIAOJUN Men’s Weightlifting Singlet and LUXIAOJUN Women’s Weightlifting Singlet are made for both competition and regular training.
Both use a mix of nylon and spandex through the main body, with lighter side panels to help you stay comfortable during longer sessions. The one-piece design stays close to the body while allowing you to squat, pull and lift overhead normally.
Whether you are preparing for your first competition or replacing an older singlet, the main priorities are simple: it should follow the rules, stay in place and feel comfortable throughout your lifts.
